What is a side in golf?

From Golf FAQ

In golf, the term "side" can refer to several different things, depending on the context.

Side of the Green[edit | edit source]

Most commonly, "side" refers to the left or right side of the green, relative to the golfer's perspective as they approach the green. This is often used to describe the position of the hole, for example, "the hole is on the left side of the green." It can also be used to describe the position of the golfer's shot, for example, "he hit his approach shot to the right side of the green."

Side of the Fairway[edit | edit source]

Less commonly, "side" can also refer to the left or right side of the fairway, relative to the golfer's perspective as they are playing down the fairway. This is often used to describe the position of the golfer's shot, for example, "he hit his drive to the left side of the fairway."

Side of the Course[edit | edit source]

In some cases, "side" can also refer to a general area of the golf course, for example, "the front nine is on the west side of the course."

Side Bets[edit | edit source]

In informal golf games, "side bets" are common. These are bets placed on specific aspects of the game, such as the number of putts taken on a hole, or the number of birdies made in a round.

Side Games[edit | edit source]

"Side games" are informal games played alongside the main game of golf. These can include games like "closest to the pin," "longest drive," or "skins."
